SUMMARY:High Risk Court Users: Tapping into the Value of Support Person as a Critical ADA Accommodation with Julie Ballinger
DESCRIPTION:Courts across the nation grapple with the challenge of providing or allowing ‘support persons’ as an accommodation\, which can be complicated and\, at times\, contentious. When executed effectively\, this accommodation can ensure equitable access for court users with diverse disabilities\, such as mental health conditions\, learning disabilities\, brain injuries\, ADHD\, and autism\, placing these individuals at higher risk within the justice system. Achieving success with this accommodation involves careful consideration: determining the right individual for this role\, addressing questions about access and functional needs\, and preserving the integrity of court proceedings and programs. Effective strategies for implementing this vital accommodation will be examined\, with particular emphasis on meeting the needs of individuals who are especially vulnerable when access is limited or denied. \nJulie Ballinger\, M.A.\, is a nationally recognized leader with 38 years advancing Disability Rights. She has delivered national impact through leadership and innovation across diverse sectors. Julie directed a Center for Independent Living (CIL)\, a nonprofit led by people with disabilities providing community services\, then became a consultant with the Southwest ADA Center (SWADAC) while employed with the University of Arkansas-providing Technical Assistance to CILs in two federal regions. For 27 years\, she has continued with SWADAC\, specializing in ADA training and TA on employment\, government\, and business/nonprofit accessibility. Over the past 9 years\, she has focused on court and correctional systems\, authoring comprehensive\, nationally distributed ADA guides tailored to each sector. \nZOOM REGISTRATION REQUIRED:\nhttps://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/AhO6RWmRT8yt95QguNuOCw
